Celebrate Coming Out Week in 2009 with a week of festivities and events! Everything is open to the public, absolutely everyone is welcome, and everything is of course free! Come out and enjoy a week filled with fun events, have some thought provoking discussion, meet new people, and enjoy food, drinks, and prizes! Celebrate Coming Out Week 2009 with GLOW!

Tuesday
9:00am – Pride Flag Raising
“We’ve got a large flag, and it needs raising! We’ll be putting our rainbow pride flag up in the SLC, and you can help with the raising and securing of it.”

11:00am – Opening Ceremonies
“Join GLOW for our kick off reception to Coming Out Week! We’ll have services booths, speakers, and time to mingle and munch.”

Wednesday
2:00pm – Movie Showing and Discussion
“We’ll be showing “Chutney Popcorn” (description here) followed by a speaking engagement and discussion by Chanda Prescod-Weinstein, PhD Candidate and Researcher at the Perimeter Institute and former Grad Student Association VP of Student Affairs.”

6:00pm – PARAGRAPH 175 Documentary and Discussion
“We are invited to join Dr Alice Kuzniar for her lecture on ‘The Persecution of Homosexuals in the Third Reich’, featuring the screening of PARAGRAPH 175, a documentary that tells the story of the men and women who were persecuted by Nazi Germany. Discussion to follow.”

7:15pm – Wednesday Night Discussion Group
“Come on out to the weekly Wednesday Night Discussion Group for fun and stimulating conversation on queer-related topics of the day.”

8:45pm – AfterGLOW Social
“Come and hang out, grab some food, have a drink, and relax at the AfterGLOW social. All ages welcome, but please bring ID.”

10:30pm – Overnight Flag Guard
“In keeping with tradition, we’ll be having an informal hang-out night near the Pride Flag all night in the SLC! There will be movies, video/board games, blankets, pillows, snacks, drinks, and more! Come out for as long or as short as you’d like! We’ll be in the Multipurpose Room from 10:30pm – 1:00am, and in the Lower Atrium from 1:00am – 8:00am.”

Thursday
6:00pm – Queer Career Speakers & Reception
“Join OneWaterloo and Career Services for a panel of speakers speaking on being queer in your career. Speakers will be coming from TD Canada, KPMG, UW Human Resources, and more! Reception to follow.”
Location: Hagey Hall 1104 (new wing)
Friday
11:00am start – Gaymazing Race!
“Be your own reality TV show in this highly-involved gameshow-style event! Teams of 2 or more people can come and set out on a race to figure out clues, navigate the campus, stumble through roadblock challenges, and make it to the finish line to win prizes! Event begins in the SLC Multipurpose Room, and starts shortly after 11am! No need to register, just show up!”

2:00pm – Closing Ceremonies
“Bring the week to a close with our final ceremony, including speakers, slideshows of the week in pictures, food, mingling, and the lowering of the Pride flag.”

Evening – Friday Night Movie Outing!
“This week we’ll be seeing “Paper Heart” at 9:25pm. This week we’ll be going to Princess Cinemas and we will be meeting in the SLC Great Hall in the SLC before heading over together. If you’re interested in coming, you can join us either at the SLC GREAT HALL sometime from 7:40-7:50pm (we’ll be leaving to catch the iXpress to Uptown Waterloo at 7:50pm sharp) OR you can meet us outside of the theater (we’ll head inside at 9:00pm, as the movie starts at 9:25pm). After the movie, we’ll go to Cafe 1842 in Uptown Waterloo. If you can’t make it to the movie then feel free to just join us there!

Monday Movie Mayhem is a weekly movie night group that was inspired by GLOW, UW’s Queer and Questioning Community Center. It’s our group’s aim to provide all individuals with a comfortable and friendly environment in which to check out some great movies!”
