GLOW + TriPride Bonfire! FRIDAY, JUNE 5!

GLOW will be holding its annual bonfire in celebration of tri-Pride 2009 on Friday, June 5th, from about 8:00 – 11:00pm. We will provide some campfire treats (such as hot dogs, veggie dogs, and marshmallows) and the required equipment. You are encouraged to bring some of your own treats and beverages, even some to share!

As a reminder, this is a non-alcoholic event. And this event is open to everyone – students, staff, faculty, and community members! Invite your friends!

We hope to see you there for this relaxing night!

Health and Wellness Day! FRIDAY MAY 29

May 26th, 2009

GLOW, UW Athletics, Warrior Weekends and One Waterloo Present Health and Wellness Day in association with Counselling Services, Health Services, Police Services and Waterloo Yoga Club.

The event will take place on Friday, May 29 and will be full of exciting events from 12:00pm until 11:00pm in the BMH Green and SLC. Events include ultimate frisbee, condom water balloon toss, yoga, information booths from Counselling, Health and Police Services, a guest speaker, food, as well as inflatable gladiator jousting! Since this is a day to promote health and wellness, make sure that you come dressed for being active. Don’t forget to put on your sunscreen and stay hydrated. Can’t wait to see you there!

May 20 Discussion CANCELED

May 17th, 2009

The GLOW Wednesday Night Discussion group on May 20th, 2009 is canceled due to extenuating circumstances.

In lieu of discussion group this Wednesday, the AfterGLOW Social will be starting earlier at the Grad House on UW campus at 7:30pm instead of 8:45pm.

Our Wednesday night discussion group will resume as usual next week on May 27. Check the discussion group page on the website for updates this week on discussion topic changes!

International Day Against Homophobia Movie Screening

To commemorate International Day Against Homophobia (May 17th), GLOW and One Waterloo will be holding a free film screening of “For the Bible Tells Me So“. The film will be shown in the Great Hall in the SLC on Tuesday, May 19th, 2009 starting at 2:00pm.

Spring Term Volunteer Meet & Greet!

Interested in volunteering and meeting other queer and questioning people?

GLOW will be holding a volunteer meet and greet on Wednesday May 6th in the PAS Lounge (PAS 3005) from 9 – 11pm. This will be a great opportunity to find out more about volunteering with GLOW and to meet other queer and questioning people who are around for the summer. There will be free food and beverages!

Polar Pride Charity Ball!

March 1st, 2009

It’s time to say goodbye to winter and party in the snow one more time! GLOW is hosting the Polar Pride Charity ball in order to raise money for charity, bring the queer community together for a fantastic night, and send off winter with a bang! There will be a dessert canape reception from 8:00pm-10:00pm during which sneak peek previews from the Rainbow Reels Film Festival will be shown, and a dance to follow!

Half of all proceeds go to ACCKWA!

WHEN? Wednesday, March 11. Doors open at 8pm.
WHERE? Caesar Martini’s in Waterloo.
WHO? All ages, with 19+ alcohol service!
TICKETS? $5 for UW students, $6 non-UW, and flat $7 at door. Tickets can be purchased at the Feds Office (in the Student Life Centre of the University of Waterloo), GLOW Office, or from Geordie Graham (geordiemg {at} hotmail(.)com)

Peer Support Training for Winter 09!

There are upcoming opportunities to take peer support training with GLOW this Winter 2009 term! The sessions contain all of the same content. Here are the dates, times and location:

Saturday, January 31st 20092-4pm, in the GLOW office (SLC 2101)

Tuesday, February 3rd 20096-8pm, in the GLOW office (SLC 2101)

Thursday, March 5th 20096-8pm, in the GLOW office (SLC 2101)

Peer support training is required if you would like to hold office hours for the Winter 2009 term. If you have already completed the training session last term (Fall 08) you can be exempt from taking the training this term (although, its always good to review).

Queer Pride Week 2008!

Happening October 18 through 24, Queer Pride Week 2008 aims to celebrate sexual and gender diversity, encourage greater visibility of the queer community, and raise awareness of coming out issues. We’ll have former UW’er Kate Daley presenting on educational models that deal with issues of queer discrimination, heterosexism, and examining privilege.

Kate Daley is an honorary member of the Federation of Students, after serving on the Feds Board of Directors during her undergrad. She is currently a Masters candidate in Political Science at Queen’s University.

Come join Dyketopia (GLOW Women’s Social Group) for a movie night with snacks, beverages, and good company. We’ll be showing the 1980’s lesbian film “Desert Hearts”.

Summary: It is 1950s Nevada, and Professor Vivian Bell arrives to get a divorce. She’s unsatisfied with her marriage, and feels out of place at the ranch she stays on, she finds herself increasingly drawn to Cay Rivers, an open and self-assured lesbian, and the ranchowner’s daughter. The emotions released by their developing intimacy, and Vivian’s insecurities about her feelings towards Cay, are played out against a backdrop of rocky landscapes and country and western songs.

Come to our GLOW and Women’s Centre Volunteer Training this Saturday!
Dr. Tracy Morgan of UW Counselling Services will show you how to
provide peer support, KW Sexual Assault Support Centre will help you
cultivate an anti-oppressive environment, and Dr. Barbara Schumacher
of UW Health Services will teach you the latest sexual health
information! Don’t worry about lunch, we’ll take care of that!

In person, on the phone, or both, we’ll be running training to hold
hours in the Community Centre (one hour training) or on the Phone Line
(multi-session training) very soon! So which ever (or both) you want
to volunteer for, first you’ll need this essential training!
