Hello everyone!

In case anyone doesn’t know, this week is Trans Awareness Week! Trans* Awareness Week is an annual GLOW campaign week dedicated to exploring issues and ideas around gender and trans identities. Everyone with a positive attitude is welcome to all Trans* Awareness Week events.

Because we don’t want to make the email too long, descriptions of all events are up on the website.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 14

Want to volunteer with GLOW for Winter 2012?

Want to volunteer with GLOW for Winter 2012? Volunteer applications are now open! The deadline is Nov. 11, 2011.
No experience is required and anyone is welcome to apply!
Some of the volunteer expectations are:
  • Professionally and sincerely represent GLOW – The Queer and Questioning Community Centre and the Federation of Students.
  • Uphold all GLOW policies: Confidentiality Policy, Inclusion Policy and Safe Space Policy.
  • Ensure ongoing communication with Executive Board in fulfilling all volunteer responsibilities.
  • Attend mandatory training at the beginning of the term.
  • Attend all mandatory volunteer meetings throughout the term.
  • Hold at least one shift of Centre Hours every week; during your shift welcome visitors to the Centre, answer questions, provide confidential peer support, monitor the atmosphere of the Centre and ensure that policies are followed, and ensure that proper logs are maintained.
  • Assist in the functional areas of GLOW by fulfilling all shift requirements at booths and events; shifts will be assigned according to the volunteer’s weekly schedule.

DRAG ME to the BOMBER

GLOW’s popular drag show is back!

Drag Me to the Bomber will happen on November 4!
A fun night of amateur and professional drag performances. This event is ALL AGES.

Almost Adam

Doors open at 8pm, show starts at 9pm, and the event ends at 2am.

Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door!
You can buy tickets at our booth in the SLC on Thursday Oct 27, Friday Oct 28, Tuesday Nov 1, Wed Nov 2, and Thurs Nov 3.

ONGOING GLOW EVENTS

MONDAY, OCTOBER 22 – SAPPHIC MONDAYS

After Coming Out Week, we’re winding down with calming tea and not-so-calming board games. So come on out and we’ll all have some social fun.

Sapphic Mondays is a casual get-together of queer women and transpeople.  All individuals are welcome as long as they are queer-positive and female-positive.  The aim of the group is to provide an opportunity for women and transpeople to meet each other, make new friends, enjoy casual conversation and have an all-around good time!

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 25 – TUESDAY MOVIE MAYHEM

Tuesday Movie Mayhem is an ongoing event that GLOW provides, allowing individuals to meet in the GLOW Centre and watch a movie (generally with a queer theme, or related to queer culture). Come to the GLOW Centre (SLC 2101) and enjoy a movie, snacks, and fiendly faces.

WEEKLY QUEER ON CAMPUS EVENTS

WEDNESDAY NIGHT DISCUSSION GROUP
The Wednesday Night Discussion Group, a GLOW sponsored event, will take place in Room 5136 of the Mathematics and Computer (MC) building from 7:15PM to 8:30PM. Coming Out Week Lunch and Talk, for uWaterloo’s Faculty, Staff and Students

Location: UW Environment 2 – EV2 2069

Time: 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm

Description: A discussion with Alison Kemper about LGBTQQ issues as they relate
to the University in a changing society. This is the second of a series of
informal get-togethers for LGBTQQ faculty, staff, students, and their
allies.

Lunch will be provided.

This is an initiative of the Status of Women and Equity Committee (SWEC),
with the support of the Faculty Association (FAUW), Staff Association
(UWSA), the Staff Excellence Fund (SEF), and GLOW.

Description: Let’s end Coming Out Week with a big bonfire!

Bring out your acoustic guitars, lawn chairs, and bonfire comfy and warm clothes and head on down to the University of Waterloo’s Laurel Creek fire pit across Ring Road from the ENV buildings beside Laurel Creek.

First Year Meet and Greet

Are you a first year to the University of Waterloo that wants to know more about GLOW, or someone who hasn’t visited GLOW much and want to become part of the community?

On Thursday, September 29, in MC 1056, from 6:30PM – 9:00PM, GLOW’s first ever First Year (first year at university or first year at GLOW) Meet and Greet will take place, where you can meet new friends, GLOW Executive Board members, and volunteers!! If you want, meet up in the GLOW Centre, SLC 2101 at 6:15 and we’ll walk over with you!

All new visitors to GLOW will receive an awesome freebie to start you off on an awesome first year with GLOW. Come to the meet and greet and craft it up to personalize your freebie. Then, from time to time, GLOW will send out a message to the GLOW mailing list that we have a freebie for you to come pick up at the Centre! When you see the message, come visit us and bring your bag and we’ll throw in something awesome for you. You know you can’t resist!

There will be also be food, games, and lots of socializing. You can ask questions about GLOW to any of our volunteers and learn all about the fantastic programs and events our service provides!
