Welcome First Years!

August 21st, 2011

Welcome first years!

While GLOW doesn’t have a strong presence during Orientation Week (due to the number of events already taking place) we are going to be around and we want to let you know how to get in contact with us early in the term.

First, our Centre is in the Student Life Centre, Rm. 2101. To get there, take the staircase directly beside the entrance to the Bombshelter Pub to the second floor. We are in the hallway to your left with the Women’s Centre.

Here are our Centre hours during Orientation Week (come visit us during breaks from Orientation Week!):

Tuesday, September 6: 11:00AM-3:00PM
Wednesday, September 7: 11:00AM-3:00PM
Thursday, September 8: 11:00AM-3:00PM
Friday, September 9: 11:00AM-3:00PM

We’ll also have booths at the following events:

Tuesday Night/Variety Night – Federation Hall
Friday/Cornerstones – Services Fair in Student Life Centre 12:00PM-4:00PM

The Centre hours for Welcome Week (the first week of classes) will be posted shortly, and then a finalized Centre schedule will be available in time for the second week of classes (starting September 18th).

The GLOW team can’t wait to meet you!

GLOW Bonfire! – Jun 9, 2011

June 10th, 2011

Hey everybody!

The bonfire is this (Friday, June 9) evening! Bring out your acoustic guitars, lawn chairs, and bonfire comfy clothes and head on down to the University of Waterloo’s Laurel Creek fire pit (see map) across Ring Road from the ENV buildings beside Laurel Creek.

We’ll be providing snacks and will start up the event around 7:30pm and will probably run until around 11:30pm or midnight. There will be signs placed by the bridge crossing Laurel Creek to the colleges and on Ring Road near the Columbia entrance and Seagram entrance pointing you in the right direction. Again, see the map I’m providing for the bonfire location as well as parking places. University charges will, unfortunately, apply.

See you all tonight!

Fall 2011 Volunteer Applications

May 29th, 2011

Hello!

In preparation for next term, GLOW is opening up General Volunteer applications to recruit our Fall 2011 team! These applications are mandatory for all individuals who are interested in volunteering with GLOW – The Queer and Questioning Community Centre. GLOW would not be able to provide the quality and quantity of services, events and programs that we provide if not for volunteers, and it is vital that we are able to bring together a strong, committed team. We are extremely excited about our incoming team!

Please note the following:

  • As mentioned above, this application is for all individuals who are interested in volunteering with GLOW in Fall 2011. If you intend on applying for a position with the Executive Board, please indicate which positions you may be interested in applying for. Once the team is selected, the applications for the Executive Board will be circulated to the team only. If you are going to be on co-op in Fall 2011, Winter 2012 applications will be available in early Fall.
  • There is a standard level of commitment required from anyone who intends on volunteering with GLOW. If you wish to volunteer in alternative ways, you must still be able to meet the basic commitment (one Centre shift per week, and additional duties as scheduled for events and booths).
  • You must be able to attend the Volunteer Training day (which is tentatively set for September 17, 2011). If you cannot attend this training, you cannot volunteer with GLOW for Fall 2011, regardless of previous training.
  • We will notify selected applicants by email. The other contact information we require on the application is for access to the Centre.
  • On the application you are asked to respond to a question regarding GLOW’s Safe Space Policy. If you are not familiar with the policy you can find a copy on GLOW’s webpage here.

Some of the perks of being a GLOW volunteer:

  • Being part of a vibrant community at the University of Waterloo committed to social justice for everyone regardless of gender expression, gender identity, sexual identity and sexual orientation.
  • Access to the Centre to use for hang-outs and studying.
  • (Pending budget approval) all volunteers will receive a GLOW t-shirt to wear on scheduled shifts and as a gift for volunteering.
  • Great experience as a volunteer for your resume, as well as training in Peer Support and (hopefully) anti-oppression – GLOW will provide references!
  • At the end of the term, a volunteer appreciation party for your commitment and dedication throughout the term.

If you are interested please read the job description on the application carefully. To read the description and submit your application please visit: http://feds.ca/opportunities/glow-general-volunteer

Looking forward to the applications!
